Echoes Beyond Borders - ongoing project
A PERFORMANCE JOURNEY THROUGH MEMORY, BODY AND BELONGING.
SIX COUNTRIES. COUNTLESS VOICES. ONE COLLECTIVE ECHO.
‘Echoes Beyond Borders’ is a cross-cultural performance by Belgian director
and documentary maker Nele Vandenbroecke.
Over six months, I will travel through Asia, co-creating temporary performances
with local communities.
Each performance is rooted in local rituals, memories and ways of expression,
created without scripts or shared language,
but through body, breath, objects and play.
From fishing villages to women’s shelters, these are raw, site-specific acts of
storytelling that reflect themes like loss, identity, mental health and resilience.
The performances are documented through video, audio and tangible materials.
The creative process of co-creating performances with local communities leads to:
– a behind-the-scenes documentary,
capturing the process and making-of each performance
– a multimedia exhibition, showcasing video, audio, and physical artefacts
– a limited-edition publication, weaving together text, visuals and voices from the journey.
This is not about staging a show.
It’s about co-creating a safe space for identity, inclusivity, expression,
witnessing, and remembrance.
Across cultures, beyond borders.
Telling stories that matter.
